Buildertrend powers the future of construction with rapidly growing data science department

Buildertrend, the leading provider of cloud-based software for homebuilders, remodelers and specialty contractors, today announced that its data science department has grown 300% since December 2017. The rapid growth of this department has helped Buildertrend build meaningful connections between previously siloed datasets to increase efficiencies for both users of its platform and its own internal operations.

Historically, the construction industry has remained heavily dependent on manual and paper-based processes, which is why it is considered by many research firms to be one of the least digitized industries. For more than a decade, construction businesses looking to gain a competitive advantage have turned to Buildertrend for its cloud-based construction management platform, which has been at the forefront of paperless project management and digital collaboration. To date, Buildertrend has helped more than 840,000 contractors worldwide modernize their businesses, and in the last year alone, the platform has been used to digitize 3.2 million purchase orders, track 2.6 million to-do tasks and issue 439,000 customer invoices.

“Every time a user takes an action within the Builder platform, such as updating a project schedule or sharing a photo with a homeowner, they are essentially generating unstructured data points, which adds up quickly when you consider that the platform is accessed more than one million times every day, said Jeff Dugger, co-founder of Buildertrend. “The data department’s role is to analyze this expansive amount of information to identify meaningful patterns that can be shared with the customer to help them boost productivity and make more informed business decisions.”

In 2019, a primary project for the data science team is to steer customers to “a-ha” moments faster, leading to quicker adoption of Buildertrend’s most-useful features and more consistent daily engagement within the platform. Specifically, the data science team plans to further evolve its project management platform to be more tailored to meet the specific needs of its users, ultimately providing a more pleasant customer experience. For example, the team is working on a project to serve the right content to the right users at the right time based on Buildertrend’s data-driven understanding of user roles and behaviors within the platform with a goal of increasing engagement through more tailored service.

Alternatively, it envisions creating a data platform that applies machine learning, proprietary algorithms and lessons learned from thousands of other completed jobs to advise customers in optimal construction flow. In theory, delivering this optimal flow would help Buildertrend customers reduce inefficiencies and delays in real-time, enabling them to deliver projects on time and under budget.

From a retention perspective, gaining a better understanding of how customers are using the platform – or not – can also steer internal recommendations. Leveraging insights from the data science team, Buildertrend’s platform will soon be able to generate a unique score to automatically flag when engagement is dipping and suggest when additional training or support is needed.

“We’re just scratching the surface of what advanced data analysis can do for Buildertrend and its end-users,” added Dugger.
