Who is CopeGrand Homes?

In Charleston, beauty comes with a cost. Salt air, humidity, hurricanes and even challenging ground instability all work against the homes built to stand there. That tension shapes how homes look, how teams construct them and how builders manage and deliver every project.

For CopeGrand Homes of Charleston, South Carolina, that reality became a standard. They chose the right way over the easy way and built systems that support that decision at every level.

Charleston doesn’t let builders coast. Every project is a test of durability, precision and discipline.

That pressure shows up in how CopeGrand approaches every job. Their team works with a clear focus:

  • Build for resilience, not just aesthetics
  • Improve every project over the last
  • Treat details and relationships with equal weight

Adam Copenhaver, co-founder of CopeGrand, explains it this way: “Our team has a mantra that we always better our best. And so we’re always thinking about how to do things better. And every project is always our next best project.”

That mindset drives better results. The team tightens processes, improves communication and raises expectations on every project.

And that’s where the shift begins.

Rethinking the client experience from the ground up

Before systems and software, most builders recognized the problem and accepted it.

Clients rarely enjoyed the process. Most described it as frustrating or overwhelming.

Ben Copenhaver, co-founder, recalls it clearly, “It was maybe 15, 20 years ago, I was still in construction when I spoke with a lot of people that were building houses. I always asked them, ‘How was your home building experience?’ Majority of them used to say, ‘It sucks,’ or ‘It’s horrible’. ‘It’s such a bad experience’.”

That insight shaped CopeGrand’s direction. They refused to deliver that same experience to their clients. They rebuilt trust in the process by changing how the work gets done.

The goal became clear. The team focused on three priorities:

  • Reduce friction for clients
  • Increase visibility across the project
  • Replace confusion with confidence

Fixing the experience meant fixing how the work actually ran.

The challenge: Balancing craftsmanship, communication and complexity at scale

Early on, CopeGrand looked like most growing builders. Spreadsheets, emails, phone calls and notes lived in different places.

It worked until it didn’t.

That turning point forced a decision. The business needed structure and not more effort. The team aligned around a new approach:

  • One place for schedules, budgets and selections
  • One system for team and client communication
  • One consistent workflow across projects

The shift from Excel and phone calls to construction management software became clear early on for the team.

“We were kind of living a little bit on the edge in that first year,” Adam said. “We quickly realized we needed a full solution to support everything that we wanted to accomplish as builders.”

Modern living room and dining area with large black-framed glass doors opening to an outdoor deck, white built-in shelving, a dining table with potted orchids, wooden beams, and contemporary furnishings in neutral tones.

The solution: Building a better process with Buildertrend at the center

“Luckily enough, we made the right selection with Buildertrend to be the hub of our wheel, to be that online filing cabinet, to be that communication device, the single source of truth for everything that we have,” Adam said.

With that shift came a core principle. “We always say that clarity is kindness,” Adam said. “That’s really important for us because we can imagine what chaos looks like outside of that, and that can be very difficult.”

When teams share the same information, they solve problems faster and reduce friction across every project. That clarity changes more than operations.

More time for what actually matters

When systems improve, teams gain time and strengthen relationships.

The impact shows up across the business. It changes how people work and how they connect:

  • Teams spend less time chasing information
  • Clients spend less time asking for updates
  • Leaders focus more on quality and experience

“I would say it’s life changing,” Ben said. “The reason why I say it’s life changing is it gives our time back to everybody on our team, every one of our clients and also our families.”

Better processes protect margins and support people at the same time. And that carries forward into the next layer of the business.

Building more than homes

CopeGrand builds more than homes. Twin brothers, Adam and Ben, built a company rooted in generational craft.

That shows up in how the team works every day. Skills are passed down, expectations stay high and experience compounds over time:

  • Craftsmanship tied to legacy
  • Mentorship built into daily work
  • Technology supporting, not replacing, expertise

“Working with my son daily is a blessing,” Joel Wilson, senior project manager, said. “Plus, he’s progressing much more quickly in Buildertrend certifications than I am.”

Sam Wilson, assistant project manager, added, “I’m a third-generation builder. My grandfather taught me everything that I know. My grandfather also taught my dad everything that he knows, so getting to work with my dad is great. It’s continuing a legacy of quality craftsmanship.”

Buildertrend supports that structure by reducing friction and keeping teams aligned so they can focus on building well. That mindset extends beyond the company itself.

Choosing community over competition

Most builders treat the market like a competition. CopeGrand takes a different approach.

“Ben and I have always had the culture on our team that we don’t have any competitors. Our biggest competitor is ourselves,” Adam said. “We always want to be a resource for the industry. We’ve made plenty of mistakes, we’ve learned a ton and we’d love to be able to share that information with everybody else.”

That perspective opens the door to something different. The team focuses on shared growth:

  • Sharing lessons learned
  • Collaborating across markets
  • Improving the industry as a whole

Buildertrend Community extends that mindset by connecting builders across regions and experiences. And that’s where the model scales.

Better processes build better outcomes

At the center of it all is a simple connection. Better systems lead to better communication and better communication leads to better homes.

Adam explains how that plays out in practice: “Buildertrend is the heartbeat of our process. It keeps every moving piece, selection, schedules, budgets connected in one place. Everyone’s aligned whether they’re in the field or in the office. And clarity from that means fewer calls, fewer mix ups and more time focused with our clients — and that’s what they deserve.”

When everything connects, the experience improves for the team, the client and the final product. That’s how CopeGrand builds differently.

CopeGrand uses software to run a stronger, more connected business.

Buildertrend became the structure behind their growth. It connects their team, their clients and every moving piece of each project in one place.

That shift shapes how they operate every day. The team now works with stronger communication and fewer breakdowns across projects:

CopeGrand still focuses on craftsmanship, relationships and continuous improvement. Buildertrend supports that focus by handling the complexity behind the scenes.
