Top 5 flooring trends your homeowners will love

The price increase of materials over the last couple years has been squeezing construction and interior design budgets across the country. Because of this, clients are seeking out more affordable alternatives for their new homes, including self-install flooring options.

But as a home builder, you can offer the benefit of a high-quality, long-lasting finish that’s compliant with the manufacturer’s warranty – and you can complete the installation far quicker than almost any DIY-er could.

A survey of 49 industry experts about flooring trends found that the three most important characteristics in 2022 are durability, aesthetics and affordability. One third of experts also commented on the importance of sustainability.

We’ve listed the five top flooring trends for 2022 recommended by experts and requested by homeowners.

1. Luxury vinyl plank

Luxury vinyl plank is the hottest floor trend this year.

LVP is a relatively new type of vinyl flooring, which is affordable at around $8 per square foot and mimics the appearance and texture of wood. The multi-ply product comes in long, narrow strips and features four layers that make it a very durable flooring option. The planks are fully waterproof, simple to maintain and easy to install as they click together.

Under the current economic status, more clients are put off by the high prices of hardwood flooring. Because of its affordability, luxury vinyl plank has quickly become one of the most attractive alternatives.

2. Wood patterns

In 2022, we’re seeing growing popularity in patterns when it comes to wood floor trends. Chevron and herringbone hold their place at the top of the list because they’re unlikely to go out of style anytime soon. But more and more, we’re seeing random, brick and straight patterns which give off a more rustic and natural feel.

Wood patterns bring elegance and interest to a room, but they require a skilled expert to install them well – which is where you come in. As the builder, you can take this opportunity to get creative and show off your craftsmanship, whether your client wants a timeless look or something more trendy.

Different woods can be selected for their color, natural markings or other characteristics which add to the effect of the pattern. The same goes for the size and shape of the piece – wide planks make the room feel bigger while mix-and-matched sizes can create an energetic flow to the space. The possibilities are endless.

3. Oversized planks

Wood or vinyl planks over 3 inches wide are more typically used in rustic and traditional designs. Their size makes them easier to install as there are fewer joins, and material wastage is relatively low. They’re used to create a sense of calm and space – which is what makes them a popular flooring trend.

Not only do wide planks make a room feel larger, but they also draw the eye to the wood as a statement piece. The larger size allows you to see more of the natural wood grain and markings, and you can play with stains and colors to create drama in a modern design or warmth in a cold space.

Oversized planks vary significantly in cost, from $10 to $30 per square foot, because of the variety of possible materials. These include click-lock options for vinyl and tongue-and-groove for wood – which makes installation much easier and the floor more watertight.

4. Tiles with geometric patterns

Tiles are beautiful, classic, easy to clean and durable – and a geometric pattern can create a wow-factor or a more subtle sense of luxury.

Geometric patterns add interest to a floor and can be used to reference different designs of personal interest, such as art deco or mid-century modern. And don’t stop at just the kitchen and bathroom. Unique patterns can be used to spice up a home office, entryway or a wine cellar. Turn a plain, boring space into a room your client never wants to leave.

This flooring trend usually causes a reaction, but a bold pattern may not be to everyone’s liking. So, if you’re building for sale, you might want to tone down the design and go for something subtle. The installation of geometric patterns is tricky by nature and makes a statement, so high-quality workmanship is crucial – but if you can nail it, your lead pipeline will be filled with premium clients.

5. Reclaimed wood

There’s nothing more eco-friendly than reclaimed timber with historic nail holes and saw marks to make a modern home feel more rustic.

Sustainability is a top priority for homeowners in 2022 who, now more than ever, are interested in going green. Reclaimed wood can be kept true to its original use and recycled character, or it can be sanded and treated until it looks new. Either way, it reduces the demand to cut and process virgin timber and saves good wood from the garbage.

Unfortunately, reclaimed wood generally costs more than new timber. This is partly due to its growing popularity and historic character, but also the cost of removing old timbers, de-nailing them and cleaning them up sufficiently for re-sale.

But regardless of price, homeowners crave the authenticity and beauty that reclaimed wood can bring to their home – and the green factor makes this flooring trend a no-brainer.

The latest flooring trends are always changing. New materials, quicker installation methods and eco-friendly options can make remodeling homes a tricky business. But your awareness of what’s current can make all the difference.
