President Biden signs American Rescue Plan Act, addresses nation
On March 11, Biden signed into law the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The new law has many relevant aspects for employers including, but not limited to, COBRA continuation coverage, modifications to the Paycheck Protection Program, employer credits for paid and sick family leave, and employee retention credits.
OSHA launches COVID-19 National Emphasis Program, prioritizes onsite inspections
Under Biden’s directions, OSHA has introduced a new National Emphasis Program aimed at companies who put the largest numbers of workers at risk for COVID-19 exposure. The program will focus on employers that retaliate against workers who file complaints related to job site safety. OSHA will be visiting job sites to ensure safety unless it is unsafe to do so.
The latest mask guidance from the CDC
The CDC recently updated its mask-usage recommendations. Specifically, employers with employees working in close contact may consider providing disposable masks and recommending employees wear two masks to reduce possible spread of the virus.
COVID-19 vaccination: Key employment issues
Nearly every employer will soon be faced with deciding whether to require employees to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. In deciding, employers have several employment issues to consider such as qualified exemptions under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Title VII religious exemptions.
