Who is Jkath Design Build + Reinvent?

Jkath Design Build + Reinvent is a home design and remodeling business based in the Twin Cities with an eye for detail and a knack for matching beautiful solutions with its clients’ needs.

“We love the challenge of reinventing a current home, which is in our business name, and maximizing it from beginning to end,” said Katie Kath, partner and interior designer at Jkath.

Not just a renovation team, Jkath is also a design house and a cabinet team – essentially three separate businesses in one. The success of its brand is reliant on these three areas collectively communicating. It’s especially important for team members to keep track of their in-house custom cabinetry schedule.

“It’s just one error that can happen on the cabinet side,” Katie said. “It will create scheduling delays that can impact the entire field, time to manage and reschedule several crews.”

Buildertrend is an important aspect of the Jkath process. While it’s not a formal requirement, Jkath has shifted to working with subcontractors who are already on Buildertrend or agree to jump on board with the software.

“Using the scheduling tool to communicate with our subcontractors has been a game changer,” Katie said.

Communication: Using Buildertrend’s construction schedule to connect the team

Katie and her team use the schedule to help communicate deadlines and tasks with subs and clients, which cuts out unnecessary meetings and emails. The schedule does more than communicate deadlines with ongoing projects – it gives buffer time for delays or mistakes and holds everyone accountable.

Most of all, the schedule keeps all members of Katie’s team in sync across their many projects.

“We can just go to Buildertrend to find that one document that has everything we need for the cabinet team that our clients have signed off on,” Katie said. “It eliminates any of the additional communication internally that would have historically happened again over the course of a dozen emails and maybe a few in-person meetings. We don’t have to do that anymore, which is great.”

The cabinet team and the design team can go back and reference all collective decisions to save time and avoid expensive errors.

Documentation: Relying on the schedule as an official record of success

The schedule shows where you’re most efficient and pinpoints what’s slowing you down.

“You’ll be able to maximize efforts on future jobs if your schedule acts as the official record of success for projects,” Katie said.

The schedule holds the truth on how long projects take, where you’re typically getting stuck and what’s moving along smoothly. That way you can capitalize on what you’re doing well and find solutions to your problems.

“Before Buildertrend, it was like, well, I’ve got this date – where am I going to put it? Do I just save it into my email folder? Do I write it on a piece of paper? Do I text it to the project manager? All of which could get lost. So we just put it into the schedule,” Katie said.

Not only does Katie use the schedule to document valuable details, but she also notes any questions on the projects to keep her team organized and in-the-know.

A major success: Time to focus on excellence

The motto at Jkath is, “everything’s down to one-eighth of an inch” – a reminder of how the team approaches all projects. With a business built around quality and craftsmanship, it’s no surprise that the bar is set high.

“Our expectation for excellence on the cabinet side is a really big deal,” Katie said. “We have very little tolerance for anything that’s less than perfect once it’s installed. With that in mind, we need a system to support our decisions.”

In order to keep the focus on what it does best, Jkath relies on Buildertrend to house and complete the administrative tasks such as scheduling and documentation.

Their solution: Finding a partner in Buildertrend

The team at Jkath was able to replace an open administrative position with Buildertrend’s software.

“Once we launched Buildertrend, we had an administrative support position open on our team,” Katie said. “With the onboarding of this software, we were able to replace this position with Buildertrend and utilize the capabilities to stay organized and grounded with each project.”

Their multifaceted business is no easy beast to tackle. They do it all – floor plans, finishes, design plans, permits, custom cabinetry and more. Buildertrend’s construction scheduling software was able to step in to lead communication and hold everyone accountable.

“If we have six or eight open houses at once or open projects at once, it’s really hard to track all of those details,” Katie said. “To have another set of eyes on what we’re doing feels like we found a real partner in Buildertrend to help align all the different showrooms and decisions. So scheduling is for sure my favorite piece.”

The team members at Jkath are constantly problem-solving innovative solutions for their clients. Now that they’ve partnered with Buildertrend, they can depend on us to manage organization and workflow coordination while they focus on that one-eighth of an inch.
