Inside Buildertrend

A day in the life of Buildertrend’s super sales team

Sales rep

Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the past 15 years, chances are you’ve seen at least one episode of “The Office.” Under the glow of fluorescent lights, the Dunder Mifflin sales crew – Jim, Dwight, Stanley, Andy and Phillis – make a deal here, pull a prank there and look bored just about everywhere.

The life of a Buildertrend sales team member couldn’t be further from that. They’re a chatty, competitive and courageous bunch. A super department composed of more than 150 people. Each one uses equal parts brilliance and charisma to share their love of the leading construction project management software with the rest of the world. Grumpy Stanleys they are not.

“The Office” did get one thing right. The sales crew was responsible for keeping the company successful by bringing in new business, leading the charge to help the Scranton office survive corporate shutdowns, closures and a weird stint with Sabre. Sales is the heart of Buildertrend, too. Bullishly and bravely expanding our reach across the globe.

To see what it’s like to be a part of this super squad, we talked with three different team members, each one occupying a different role in sales: Grant Harrill, business development representative; Emma Ramsbottom, business development specialist; and Eamon Adamson, sales development representative.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities? How does your role differ from others in the sales department?

Grant: Within my role, I reach out to potential customers to show them how valuable our platform is in this industry. I would say the biggest difference opposed to other sales positions is the challenge of establishing an initial impression and relationship.

Emma: My day-to-day responsibilities are made up of online demonstrations for prospective customers along with a lot of follow-up calls. My role differs quite a bit from others in our sales department because a BDS only performs the online demos that are set up for them and handles preliminary follow ups.

Eamon: My job is to cross-reference and call hot leads that hit our website to get them scheduled for a demonstration of our software.

How do you like to start each day?

Grant: Especially now that we are working from home temporarily amid the coronavirus crisis, I make it a priority to start my day with an early bike ride or a run. I like to follow that up with breakfast and a few cups of coffee. It’s the simple things in life!

Emma: First and foremost, I like to start my day with a large cup of coffee before I turn on my computer. Secondly, I’ll look at my calendar to see what demos I have and then organize what calls I need to make first.

Eamon: By going through my daily activities, lead queue and past client queue to make sure everything is all clear.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do?

Grant: I love the thrill of the chase, as well as developing rapport and business relationships with potential customers. I have worked on both sides of the construction industry, and completely understand our customers’ lifestyle. It is very rewarding to set them on a path that helps them solve issues and struggles they’ll no longer have to face on a daily basis.

Emma: Finding a solution that makes our customers’ lives easier. A lot of companies we initially start to work with have a lot of pain points. When you can show them ways to make their business better and they get excited about using our platform, it makes getting that deal even sweeter.

Eamon: Interacting with people from all over the world who have a real interest in Buildertrend.

You all are some of our top sales performers. What’s the secret to your success?

Grant: I believe most of my success comes from my pace and intent. Sales is a numbers game, and when persistence meets timing you will find yourself in a great spot. It’s important to listen more and accommodate the needs of potential customers while keeping their best interest at the forefront.

Emma: I would say truly listening to a company’s needs and finding a way for our platform to help them. Also, in sales, following up with potential customers is key, whether it’s calling them or sending emails that will capture their attention.

Eamon: Hard work – but that wouldn’t matter if I didn’t have a team around me that helps with any question or concerns. Also, we’re such a positive company. I try to use that same positive attitude in every call I make.

What makes working at Buildertrend so awesome?

Grant: Everyone I have met at Buildertrend is incredibly positive and supportive, both in and out of the office. It’s very humbling to be a part of such a great organization!

Emma: It’s 100% the company’s culture and employees. The owners and management team have created an atmosphere that’s exciting to work in. With us being a younger company, everyone looks out for each other and management truly cares about their employees’ success. The team treats each other equally and are willing to help others out when it’s needed, too.

Eamon:  It’s all about the camaraderie and the competition. I love how there is always someone available to help you be better at what you do.
