How to celebrate National Construction Appreciation Week 2022

Nearly eight million Americans work in the construction industry and are responsible for creating about $1.4 trillion worth of structures each year.

Impressive, right?

Whether it’s the office you work at every day, the taco restaurant you visit on Tuesdays or the cozy home you share with your family, someone in construction built it for you. This probably wouldn’t cross your mind on an everyday basis. But we’re asking you to think about and appreciate that fact from September 19–23 this year. Why?

The third week in September is National Construction Appreciation Week – and we want you to take part in the celebration.

Some background about National Construction Appreciation Week

Founded in 2018 by I Build America, National Construction Appreciation Week was officially recognized as an official holiday by the Registrar of National Day Calendar. I Build America is a national movement intent on supporting the construction workforce, educating the public about its value and recruiting the next generation of construction professionals.

National Construction Appreciation Week aims to support this movement by spreading the word and building pride within the industry – regardless of company size or specialty.

By telling the story of construction workers, educating the public and showing our appreciation, we can uplift the men and women doing the work that makes all our lives better.

Why you should celebrate National Construction Appreciation Week

Besides just wanting any excuse to celebrate a holiday, you should want to celebrate this one. It directly impacts you whether you realize it or not.

The cell phone that’s glued to your hand? A construction worker built the cell tower that allows you to browse Facebook. Your morning cup of coffee? A plumber built the pipe system in your home that provided the fresh water for your brew. The school your kids attend while you’re at work? A contractor and their team built it with your child’s safety in mind.

These modern conveniences wouldn’t be possible without the hardworking men and women in construction – and it’s time to show some gratitude.

How you can get involved with Construction Appreciation Week

Here are several ways you can observe this meaningful holiday:

  • Share on social media: Post your own construction photos with the hashtags: #ConstructionAppreciationWeek #ThanksForBuilding
  • Leave a good review: If you’ve used a roofer, plumber, remodeler or other construction team in the past, hop on Google and share your positive experience
  • Share featured videos: Follow I Build America on social media and share their posts:
  • Say thank you: If you see a construction worker on the side of the road or working on a neighbor’s house, just say thanks! The simple sentiment goes a long way
  • Bake some goodies: Whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies or homemade muffins and drop them off at a nearby construction site

How construction managers can acknowledge their staff

National Construction Appreciation Week isn’t just about the everyday folk recognizing the work our construction pros do for us. It’s also about leadership in construction recognizing their own staff and celebrating their wins.

Praise and recognition from management lead to improvement in employee satisfaction. This is why leadership should find ways to show their appreciation year-round. But for National Construction Appreciation Week in particular, here are several ways to acknowledge your staff:

  • Host an awards show
  • Take the team out to a nice dinner
  • Surprise the crew with a party
  • Give one of your hardest workers a bonus day off
  • Offer extra praise for the little things

Your employees will appreciate the recognition. Happy construction workers mean better job sites, satisfied clients and overall business growth. Everyone wins.
